Enjoy a Kyoto Summertime Tradition: Kawayuka & Kawadoko Al Fresco Dining

Not many foreign visitors know about this delightful summer tradition in Kyoto known as Kawayuka & Kawadoko. Thus, it gives us great pleasure to introduce this ‘cool’ and relaxing summer tradition to our guests from around the world.

Summer in Kyoto can be very hot, and Kyoto people have traditionally dealt with the heat in some very inventive ways. One of those ways is known as Kawayuka & Kawadoko dining, which refers to platforms built over the soft flowing rivers and streams so as to offer diners a cooling natural respite from the heat of the city. Kyotoites love to enjoy meals on these decks, relishing the delicious foods and the cool natural breezes.

In central Kyoto, you can find Kawayuka restaurants along the Kamogawa River between Nijo Street and Gojo. However, for an even more unique experience, you can visit the Kibune River, about one hour from the hotel, and sit amongst lush greenery over a rushing mountain stream and enjoy delicious summer specialties at one of the 20 restaurants with Kawadoko. Another rural area famous for its river-topping decks and food is in Takao along the Kiyotaki River, which is about a 40-minute ride from the hotel. Each area has its own allure and charm; for instance, those along the central Kamogawa River are very lively and beautifully lit in the summer evenings, while those at Kibune and Takao are serene and secluded and some five degrees cooler than in the city.

So that our guests can enjoy this uniquely Japanese experience, the Hotel Granvia Kyoto has made arrangements with one restaurant from each of the three areas described above. We make all of the arrangements for you, so relax and revel in an exotic dining experience rarely ever enjoyed by foreign visitors to Kyoto.
